Would you wear a garbage shoe? The first impulse here is definitely a clear “no”. But if you hear about the new Nike sneaker model "Space Hippie", you may still change your mind. The sneaker is the next step of the sports label towards sustainability. Not only does it have a lower carbon footprint than any Nike shoe before, it also looks pretty stylish.
Sustainable from the materials to the packaging
The designers thought holistically when creating the new sneaker model. They were not only concerned with using sustainable materials, but also to keep production as low in CO2 as possible and also to use more sustainable alternatives for packaging.
"We believe the future of our products will be circular," said Seana Hannah, VP Sustainable Innovation at Nike. "We have to think about the whole process: how we design a product, how we manufacture it, how we use and reuse it, and how we avoid waste at every step."
The result is a sneaker in four versions, the surface of which consists of 90 percent recycled materials, you could also say garbage. For the so-called “Space Waste Yarn”, waste from the production of other Nike sneakers, old plastic bottles and old T-shirts are used.
6 sustainable fashion labels that you should get to know
Design remains the focus of the “Space Hippie”
Sustainable fashion often still bears the certain “eco stamp”, and there have long been numerous labels that skilfully and stylishly combine under one roof. The Nike “Space Hippie” can also keep up with other trendy sneaker models. But you can see a little bit of the ecological idea. However, this is a very conscious style decision. Because the components of the names "Space" and "Hippie" are capitalized here: futuristic in the production, but in the look it reminds a little of the hippie fashion of the 70s with laces, sole and colors.
By the way, did you know that Nike already has another sneaker model made of 70 percent recycled materials in its range? The Nike Airmax 270 has been the company's most sustainable model to date.
Available this spring
It seems that the Nike “Space Hippie” is initially supposed to be a rather exclusive product. It should be available this spring, but only for Nike members in the Nike sneaker app as well as in flagship stores and at selected retailers. If you want to secure the coveted model, it is best to download the app so you don't miss any news.
