We're headed into 2021 and some vibrant beauty trends have already started to emerge. TikTok has dictated many of them, from unexpected skin care practices like slugging to makeup fads like adding blush to our noses. But when it comes to hair, the fashion set is always on top. Could it be that fashion consciousness and insanely good hair go hand in hand? We'll wait for the research on this theory to show up and until then we'll just keep looking at our favorite fashion girls to tell us how to style our hair.
As we look forward to warmer weather and hopefully prepare for more positive changes in our daily lives, we thought it advisable to consult with some leading hairdressers for a glimpse of the upcoming spring hair trends that will take on the year 2021. Scroll on to learn about the 10 trends they're looking forward to the most, and get inspired by mood board inspirations from some of our favorite fashion girls.
Hairdressers predicted that hair resuscitation would dominate in the 90s in 2021, and they were right. At the beginning of spring, the famous hairdresser Laura Polko says that the mood is becoming even more playful. Think braided antennae, space buns, baby spice-inspired mini ponytails, and more. "Anything is possible. From updos to half-up, half-down, these styles are so popular right now because they're so fun and nostalgic," she explains.
Do you want to get the 90s full? According to Polko, adding hair accessories like the iconic butterfly clips is the perfect finish. She recommends this from Scunci for the quintessential 90s capricious.
Celebrity hairdresser Kendall Dorsey agrees that even more styles from the '90s are making their way into the top of spring hair trends, and one he is particularly looking forward to is the return of the bombshell pixie cut, the Hollywood one in the second half of the year conquered this decade. You know the cut he's talking about – the one made famous by actresses like Halle Berry and Nia Long. According to Dorsey, it's a super-short, tapered cut that looks gorgeous in rich, deep colors like black to highlight shiny, healthy-looking hair. "Halle Berry's was cut right above the ear with not many layers – super simple and very easy to care for," he explains. "I think it's the perfect time and time of year for women to feel this novelty."
Along with a flat boar bristle brush, Dorsey says the key to styling this cut is using a tiny straightener that can reach close to the roots and create shape on small pieces. Then finish with some pomade to set the shape and give it more shine.
Dorsey also believes the custom hair education many women received after a year of grooming their own locks at home will manifest in big overs this spring. "I honestly think trend number one is going to have a lot to do with the big chop. A lot of women have played with their natural hair and figured out how to transition into 2021 and whatever that means," he says. Hydration is the top priority here to keep the curls growing and thriving and if you have curly or curly hair your pattern will keep peeling open.
Dorsey recommends this moisturizing spray with stronger rice water to use after a wash and to rehydrate the hair between shampoos.
Curly and Coily Girl aren't the only ones who can partake in a big chop, however. The cut that turns out to be one of the most popular of the new decade, the bob, will continue to gain traction. This is what all of our experts say, who all agree that the bob is here to make it through spring and beyond. "The 90s bob is rounded, tapered and ultra-feminine. It's so versatile," says famous hairdresser Nikki Nelms.
Not ready to chop your hair down to your chin? Dorsey says this is the perfect opportunity to try a wig. This way, you can keep the length of your real hair while playing around with a shorter style.
For a sleek, blown bob, Nelms recommends adding Sebastian's dark oil to smooth the strands and add shine.
When cool girl beach waves are faster, she says a few scrunches and sprays from Sebastian's Shaper Plus are the best grip.
This could well be yet another callback to the 90s and the aesthetic that took hold during the grunge era, but pink hair has been bubbling for a couple of years. So far, the trend has mostly been in pastels and subtle streaks of temporary color, but suddenly more vibrant shades of pink are popping up all over the hair as the leader of the pack. Demi Lovato and Naomi Osaka are already on board.
Double-band braids have been a fashion girl favorite for a while now, but there's another double-band configuration that's gaining in popularity right now: blown hair. Start with a ponytail (or two!) And secure evenly spaced sections of hair down the length with clear elastic bands to create the effect of bubbles throughout the ponytail. It's more fun to adopt the chic braid, which adds both playfulness and shine, and takes just a few minutes to complete.
We still spend a lot of time at home, but we regularly collaborate with others via video calls and increase IRL (socially distant) interactions. Suddenly we need a style that can read both casually and composed, and our experts agree that an updated rendering of the hairknot is the perfect solution. "Traditional topknots can become very ballerina very quickly," jokes Nelms. "Airy buns are more America's next top model than toddlers and tiaras. A one-time serving of Sebastian's Shaper Hairspray ($ 20) is the perfect addition to that chic and tousled look." She says you can take a relaxed approach by gathering all of your curls into a simple bun but not worrying about straightening every single flight.
Polko agrees, adding that loose, face-framing curls are another fun way to liven up your topknot. “One of my favorite looks right now is a full updo with front pieces that frame your face. They're easy to achieve but look so stylish,” she says. Gwyneth Paltrow existed circa 1997 and we love it!
According to Polko, texture spray is the key to the perfect tousled topknot: "To do this at home, try a texture spray like this after your styling. This spray has a strong hold and gives your hair enough grit while still being remains mobile. "
"The T3 Lucea Flat Iron is going to be fantastic for the front strands here too, keeping them nice and chunky," she adds.
Everyone is still crazy about curtain bangs including Polko who believes we will see an uptrend again this spring. “Curtain bangs are perfect when you're bored and need a change but aren't ready to take the plunge with regular bangs. They're much more approachable than a full bang, but they take your look to the next level,” she explains. She recommends holding onto a beveled-edged iron (like the T3 Lucea option mentioned above) to flip the ends down before brushing the bangs on either side of your face.
A good blowout primer is essential to remove frizz and keep your bangs as fresh as the day you cut them.
We don’t wear our pearl necklaces that much these days, so we’re not at all surprised that the accessories have been used as hair ornaments lately. So resourceful. Nelms also loves the idea, pointing out that other materials like thread are very accessible, come in tons of sizes and colors, and fit into so many different styles.
Dorsey also predicts renewed interest in a style that started bubbling last year: the shag haircut. "Not the mullet, but the shag," he clarifies. "For this more adventurous, fashion-conscious woman, I think the shag is very trendy right now. The crisp, lived and simple texture is perfect – almost like your boyfriend cut your hair." (Seriously though, don't let your boyfriend cut your hair unless he's a pro.) Dorsey says the best thing about this cut is that it works for all kinds of hair textures and lengths and is just as cool, no matter the hair you work with. "I think we're going to see long shags, medium-length shags, and short, tapered shags," he says.
To get the shag on, Dorsey recommends getting your hair adequately hydrated with a leave-in conditioner, letting it air dry for the most part, and hitting it with a quick squeeze from your Dyson hairdryer. Next, our hair has never been softer or happier thanks to this breakthrough product
