Dear ones, as you already know, I am the mother of two children aged 12 and 9. School, meeting friends, ballet, football club, playground and exchanges with peers – like all children in countries with lockdown, they have to do without all of this for an indefinite period of time. It is extremely difficult for me not to get emotional with this topic, to have to watch my son become downright depressed because everything that his heart burned for was taken away from him in one fell swoop. Even if I had already spent a lot of time with my children before Corona and now I don't mind being there for them even more, I still cannot offer you what you would get in contact with people of the same age. I am really very concerned about the souls of all of our children and would therefore like to draw your attention to the petition Children need children: opening up day-care centers and primary schools ’.

Children need children
Contact with peers and people outside the core family is essential for healthy personality development. Social learning, school-based learning and suggestions from educational specialists are no longer applicable due to the applicable restrictions and cannot be adequately balanced in the core families due to the current exceptional situation. In all of the solutions discussed so far in the federal states, only a small number of children between the ages of 0 and 10 should be given access to educational institutions. A social life independent of their parents is hardly possible for children of this age. Currently, this means social isolation for the majority of them for an unforeseeable period of time, since even the accompaniment of two unrelated children by adults in public is not clearly regulated. Impulse paper: Unfortunately, children have to stay outside!
About science and virus throwers
"For eight weeks now, children have been denied participation in social life – but on what basis is this decision now being adhered to?
School and daycare closings made sense at the start of the pandemic. It was known how quickly some other viruses spread in day-care centers. The sharp but sensible cuts affected all strata of the population. For five weeks we practiced social distancing in solidarity. For five weeks children were in social isolation. While various easing of the measures were decided, there was no easing for children for three more weeks. Eight weeks may seem short to us as adults – it is a very long time for children. During this time, they were not allowed to meet their friends, there were no kindergarten or school structures and leisure facilities were closed. In addition, not every child has much from their parents who stayed at home, as they have to work in the home office.
In the meantime many voices, both private and professional, have been heard, and children have also been mentioned in politics. All of these voices emphasize the urgency of giving children access to public life again. So far, they have only received little attention. Politicians have not yet issued a concrete plan for the design. While in various neighboring countries there is now a gradual transition to regular care for children and schools, in Germany this seems to be a long way off.
In Germany, on the other hand, reports on research results regarding the viral load in children are rampant. A risk of infection from children is derived from this, which has not yet been proven in this way. Nevertheless, big headlines warn against the opening of daycare centers and schools. Parents are unsettled by these reports, after all, they do not want to expose their own children or other people to any danger. At the same time, they worry about their children, some of whom are now clearly suffering from the massive restrictions.
The current debate about opening kindergartens and schools urgently needs more prudence. Experts emphasize that a look at the entirety of the current research indicates low virus transmission by children. In the heated debate about our children, however, these level-headed words are rarely heard.
Sensory reports have declared children to be super spreaders of the pandemic, although there have been no reports of frequent infections in emergency care facilities. There, where especially children are cared for, whose parents work in the medical field or in retail and are therefore exposed to a high risk of infection.
What remains to be determined: A comprehensive and conclusive assessment of the spread of VIrus by children will only be possible in months or years. Politically, it is quite rightly not wanted that people belonging to the risk group are forced into social isolation – the isolation of children is currently accepted as inevitable
It will be a task for society as a whole to protect the weakest from illness, but also to protect society as a whole from the current measures. This means a balanced relationship between infection protection and the protection of human dignity and the right to freedom.
One thing must not be forgotten: those, which in the lastt have shown solidarity for the most part for eight weeks and have limited themselves to the maximum in comparison to all other strata of the population, are the children!
It is all the more shocking what role children are currently playing in the discussion regarding the opening of kindergartens and schools. They are degraded to objects. Objects that are dangerous, that need protection, or that require care. In the infection process, they are referred to as "virus spinners". In the context of emergency care, they are divided according to the needs derived from the parents' professions, but not their own needs.
Children are denied elementary basic rights – they are not allowed to participate in society in accordance with protection against infection. This is justified with the pure subjunctive that children could be just as contagious (!) As adults. Those who have recently been eased to enable significantly more participation in social life.
Based on the statements made so far by politicians, we have doubts that the proposed measures are really the best compromise between infection protection and the participation of children in society. From our point of view, care in fixed small groups by trained educators is preferable to opening up playgrounds with regard to both aspects, where different families meet every day and chains of infection are much more difficult to track.
We do not have the impression that the announced details of the planned plans to reopen kindergartens and schools are sufficiently geared towards the child's best interests. In the entire debate, it will be important to discuss children again as fully fledged subjects and to rehabilitate them from their falsely ascribed role as virus spreaders.
Now it is urgently necessary that we adults take our responsibility and show solidarity with the children. By continuing to keep the curve flat #flattenthecurve and at the same time enabling our children to participate in society that they are entitled to."
