After soy, almond, rice and oat milk, there is now a new plant-based milk alternative that is entirely to our taste: pea milk. Because it is not only good for the environment, but also nutritious without too many calories.
Whether due to a vegan diet or a lactose intolerance, plant-based alternatives to ordinary cow's milk are becoming increasingly popular. No wonder that pea milk * is now increasingly being found on supermarket shelves. But how healthy is pea milk?
Pea milk: what is it anyway?
Do not worry! Pea milk is neither green nor a viscous porridge. One reason for this is that pea milk is made from yellow peas. In fact, it hardly differs in terms of appearance and consistency from the well-known cow's milk. But when you look at the nutritional table, the surprise: a glass of pea milk scores with more than 10 grams of protein and is therefore perfect for those who are active in sports. By the way: Officially pea milk in Germany must be called a "pea drink", so you will find this name on all packaging.
But how healthy is pea milk?
In addition to protein, pea milk also offers lots of fiber, few calories, practically no fat and a versatile composition of vitamins. It is also very interesting for vegans, vegetarians and nut allergy sufferers that the alternative milk has many essential omega-3 fatty acids and is rich in calcium. These micronutrients are often missing from an animal-free diet, but are important for metabolic processes as well as healthy muscle building and strong bones.
What does pea milk taste like?
With its mildly sweet taste, pea milk reminds us a bit of soy milk, but tastes even nuttier. Whether you like it is – as so often – a matter of taste. Above all, the creamy taste is great for us with a delicious breakfast cereal.
But pea milk also cuts a fine figure in cappuccino. It is also a great alternative to cream when cooking. Conveniently, the pea drink can also be used for baking recipes or in meals such as porridge. For salty and savory dishes, the plant drink is suitable for soups, pesto or even lasagna.
Pea milk is definitely a great environmentally friendly milk alternative, which we are now firmly integrating into our menu. Especially if you want to do without animal products for the sake of the environment, the pea drink is a great replacement for cow's milk. Have you already tried it?
