Hello there 🙂
It was the news that was heard around the world: In November, Senator Kamala Harris made history as the first black woman and the first South Asian woman to be elected Vice President of the United States. Although she has served as the San Francisco District Attorney, the California Attorney General, and the California Senator, securing the White House puts her in the brightest spotlight of her 30-year career.
And yes, that means more people will be paying attention to what she's wearing. As any avid fashion lover knows, one can be interested in a woman's style and their substance, not just one or the other. And with this attitude I wanted to point out the one piece of jewelry that Harris has integrated into almost every outfit for public appearances for decades: pearl necklaces. Our first photographic evidence? Her 1986 college graduation photo.
Harris clearly made a conscious choice to use pearls to create a signature style – a uniform, if you will. Not only does a uniform make it easier to get dressed in the morning, but in my opinion it can also convey a sense of reliability and even loyalty. It's also worth noting that the pearls could be a tribute to Harris' college sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha – the first African-American sorority with Greek letters – which refers to the founders as the twenty pearls. Whichever way you look at it, there is no doubt that she intends to bring her pearls of wisdom, both literally and figuratively, to the White House. Scroll down to see how she has worn them for over 25 years.
