Trust me when I say that I am not proud of the amount of sturdy items scattered in my closet. Every season I will try to make at least a few purchases from the ROYGBIV spectrum in order to upgrade my otherwise beige-black wardrobe. But I find that by default I use a generally neutral color palette. As someone who doesn't like to take the time to get ready in the morning, it feels like a no-brainer not to worry about any items in my closet conflicting with each other. However, I will give myself a little pat on the back because I recently switched from grout (a purely gray outfit) to warmer ensembles with a beige focus. Brown counts as a living color in my book.
But despite the minimalism of a neutral color palette, the chic combinations that can result from it are anything but boring. It only takes a little extra imagination to keep a lackluster look at bay. But as these celebrities prove, a few overlay tricks and a selection of fun textures are all you need to keep your relatively monochrome look before the game. Read on to see the looks that reinforce my love for neutrals.
On Gigi Hadid: Longchamp vest; Story Mfg. Sweatshirt; EB Denim OG reinvented ($ 287); Memory of lifelong cowboy boots ($ 789); Mango Croc-Effect Bag ($ 40); Tejesta J.P.G. Japanese gold ($ 265). A prime example of neutral tones that are still fun. Instead of opting for a simple light brown sweatshirt, Gigi put a batik version under a motorcycle vest. Maybe I should consider making red western boots my color purchase of the year.
On Kendall Jenner: Supriya Lele above; Paris Georgia Bella Bra ($ 225); Re / Done Jeans; Emili earrings; Nike Air Force 1 ($ 90); By far Mini Rachel Bag ($ 358). Kendall Jenner brings a twist to her usual casual uniform by combining her high waisted jeans and Nike Air Force 1s with a sheer button down shirt and a satin bralette. On paper, their outfit is as classic as they come, but opting for a plain top over a plain top is the key to proving that you can still make current trends work within the modest neutral color spectrum.
On Margot Robbie: The Row Moa dress made of ribbed wool and cashmere blend ($ 1150); Mango Belted Wool Coat ($ 230); Pierre Hardy Mules; Chanel bag. Margot Robbie looks so chic and editorial (the coat that is neatly thrown over her shoulders is the oldest styling trick in the book) and shows a nifty beige ensemble.
On Bella Hadid: H2OFagerholt jacket; Amiri sweater; Adidas Yeezy Boost 700 Analog (from $ 285); Dior wallet; DMY by DMY Olsen rectangular sunglasses ($ 130); Ambush necklace; Dior x Shawn Stussy necklace; Svelte Amelia Hoops ($ 465). Meet my dream transition outfit now that spring is on the way. Showing how reliable she can be, Bella Hadid tossed a fluffy zipped fleece jacket over her casual brown turtleneck and white jeans.
On Ashley Graham: Free People Phoebe Set ($ 148); Sam Edelman Hai knee boots ($ 200). I really hope the sweater hype never subsides. It looks so good that it is still dressed well enough to work on multiple occasions.
On Kaia Gerber: Imaan x Frame Leather Darted Blazer ($ 1195); Polo Ralph Lauren lamb suede flare pant ($ 800); By far Laura Booties ($ 562); By far Miranda Bag ($ 624). If I could sketch my exact dream outfit for 2020, it would be a variation of Kaia Gerber's look here. I think it's great that she bursts her neutrals by playing with textures, avoiding a wool blend blazer for a leather blazer, and replacing plain pants with suede flares.
On Hailey Bieber: Jil Sander Mantel; Petar Petrov sweater; Nike Air Force 1 ($ 90); Saint Laurent New Wave SL 299 ($ 380); Jennifer Fisher Samira Huggies ($ 265). The neutral monochrome look has changed from grout to a cream and beige ensemble from head to toe. Hailey Bieber ensures that her light outfit is given a certain dimension by opening her cream-colored sweater and pants with a pink coat.
