Take it from someone who has recovered from a bad bleaching job: I know very well the frustration of dealing with (and curing) brittle, damaged hair. Although I'm sure we'd all like to think that we feel crappy about the condition of our hair (there are more important concerns in the big scheme of things, after all), how our hair can look and feel, a major impact on how we do it feel us. A fleeting day with bad hair here and there is one thing, but it can feel hard if you are aware of your hair (trust me, I was there). And hey, that's no shame! We are only human and our hair is a big part of our identity. Therefore we naturally want to be proud of it and take care of it to the best of our ability. I don't have to tell you that overworking and misusing our hair with color, chemical treatments, extensions, and hot tools can severely affect the integrity of our strands. And while in some cases a drastic amount of hair (like a mega chop) can really change the health of your hair, strategic, high quality hair products – like an over-repair mask – can work wonders. (Especially if you're consistent – consistency is key!) Since Courtney Higgs and I both had a fair share of triumphs and torture, we've shared some of our favorite damaged hair masks below. But we don't stop there! I also asked two top hair experts – Redken brand ambassador Matt Rez and expert hairdresser Alessandra Saman – for some of their top tips. "I love this mask because you can feel the difference immediately after use and the feeling lasts up to three washes – for me it is tremendous to feel the repair with just one use! This hair mask makes hair up to 15 times stronger, therefore, it is a great solution for weakened and damaged hair. Soy protein is an important part of this formula because it restores the structure of your strands and traps moisture. "- Use: Shampoo, dry and mask from roots to roots apply the tips. Leave on for up to five minutes. Rez recommends using this prescribed regimen every third wash to restore your hair to a healthier state. "Over the course of my years as a stylist, I have found that the Inphenom treatment mask is the most suitable for treating damage to all hair textures. I like to use it once a week or before every second wash, but you can use it as often as you like. I was recommended by a famous hairdresser who recommended this senseless hair mask to me right after highlighting my entire head and treating some damage. After just one assignment, I was thrilled and recommend it to anyone who ever needs help in the hair repair department. (And for the report, they're always obsessed with the results.) This is an intense restructuring mask that uses vegetable keratin and a biacidic bond complex to nourish and rebuild weakened threads from the scalp to the ends. I promise your hair will feel softer and more resistant after just one use! Application: Because this hair mask is so intense, a little is enough for this hair mask and you should not use it too often or wear it for too long. However, apply it to towel-dried hair immediately after washing, and focus on the most damaged parts of your hair – probably the lengths and ends – when applying. Rinse and condition as usual after 10 to 15 minutes. The brand recommends using every two to three shampoos. "This is a great product to let you soak before heat styling. It is a special treatment that reduces damage and strengthens the hair fiber when using your hot tools. It is a great masking solution that helps you avoid and avoid split ends . For a deep night treatment, I like to wrap my mask-soaked hair with an Aquis Lisse Luxe hair turban ($ 30) before bed and just wash it off in the morning with a cool rinse. "This mask is one of my favorites for several reasons. It not only smells like a piece of heaven, it also leaves my hair sealed and shiny without weighing it down. Since I only wash my hair once a week it takes a while for me knows what my hair really likes, but this mask has been a hit from the first use. I use it whenever my hair needs an extra shine, about once a month. "- Higgs. Application: Apply the mask to your towel-dried hair immediately after washing. Approximately Leave on for 10 minutes, comb through and then rinse. This is another hair mask that is great for damaged hair. It's formulated for all hair types and it's another option where Cass sometimes bleaches my hair. It contains Ouai's signature Melrose Place fragrance (rich rose with bergamot, lychee, cedarwood and white musk accents), repairs existing damage, strengthens hair to prevent future damage, and repairs split and broken ends. Application: If your hair is extremely damaged, you can use this hair mask after shampooing instead of your normal conditioner. Simply work through the damp threads to mask and work in gently with your fingers and comb through. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water. The name of this hair mask doesn't lie. It was really the transformative food for the damaged soul of my tormented strands. It's one of the few masks I've tried that have a super creamy consistency and look like they're weighing down my fine hair but, miraculously, they don't. Instead, the look, texture, shine and elasticity of my hair is thoroughly restored when it feels piqued by too much heat and color abuse. How to use: This is another hair mask that can be used entirely in place of your normal conditioner if the damage to your hair requires a more aggressive rescue protocol. Or you can use it as a weekly treatment after the shampoo. Just let it sit for five (or more) minutes and then rinse it off. "This is the mask I grab when my hair is really in trouble. Whether it's broken, dull, brittle or just too frizzy, this mask quickly gets me back on track. I love how thick and luxurious it is Formula is and how I don't need to use half of the container to coat every strand of hair. It may not be suitable for people with thinner hair, but its intense moisturizing ability is perfect for me and mine. "- Higgs. How to use: Start cutting wet, freshly shampooed hair. Spread out and comb through generously. Let it rest for at least five minutes, or frankly how long you can keep it. Years ago I experienced an epic bleaching disaster that almost justified cutting my hair. However, with the help of some key products, I was able to save my hair, and this Aveda OG formula was one of them. (Psst! I also discovered it in so many kits for celebrity hairdressers.) It could be made from 98% natural ingredients, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a serious effect on repairs. It is an exposure treatment which, with regular use, reduces the break in a week by only 90% and at the same time prevents future damage and protects fragile strands from heat damage. The secret ingredient? Quinoa protein. Application: Apply a small amount of this leave-in mask to damp hair and gently comb it through to ensure that it is evenly distributed. Leave it in and style it as usual – you don't have to rinse it off before the next wash day. This, along with the Aveda hair mask above, is one of the few beauty products that have literally been in my shower since college. Yes, this hair mask is so amazing and so effective that I had no reason to remove it from my regime. This is a hair mask that really transforms your hair after just one use. It has been specially developed to treat and reverse damage (be it through color, heat styling or the like) and immediately makes the hair soft, velvety and shiny. When I went through the hair disaster I mentioned earlier, I used it regularly as a conditioner and also fell asleep overnight as a deep treatment. Key MVPs include oatmeal extract, apricot kernel oil, sweet almond oil, and flaxseed extract – all rich in moisturizing and strengthening vitamins and antioxidants that hair desires. Application: Apply a quarter (ish) amount to the hair for daily use, focusing on the ends before applying excess to the medium length and scalp. Leave it on for two to three minutes and then rinse with cold water. If you are doing a deep treatment, apply a medium, palm-sized amount to all of your damp hair, comb it through, wrap it with plastic and a warm towel, and blow your hair dryer around your head for three to five minutes. Rinse with warm water and finish with cold water. I know. I know: $ 225 is a crazy amount to spend on any type of beauty product, but it seems extremely wrong for something you wash out of your hair. But listen to me. This is not an ordinary hair mask. Philip B (yes, there is a real man and I had the wonderful pleasure of meeting him) has been in the industry for decades and is considered one of the best hairdressers ever. When he created his own botanical hair care line, it was gold. This luxurious mask does everything – it restructures, revitalizes, invigorates and regenerates all hair types and all damage. It also prevents breakage and keeps annoying split ends at bay. My hair feels like silk immediately after each use and goes through several washing and styling sessions. Application: Apply shampoo and a large drop of the mask to wet hair and massage it from the root to the bottom. Comb carefully and leave in for as long as necessary. The brand recommends between three and 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and you're done! No need to condition afterwards. "This mask is everything for me. I have been using it for at least 10 years at this point because it really repairs my hair when I get the heat styling overboard. Though there is nothing like a This nourishing mask ensures that don't break my hair and send it in the right direction. "- Higgs. Application: Massage this mask into clean, damp hair and concentrate on your ends. Let it sit for five to seven minutes before rinsing it thoroughly, or put a plastic shower cap on and sit under a dryer (or halo your hair with a blow dryer) for 10 minutes.
