While recently scrolling through my Instagram I saw a lot more unique pieces like corsets made from Nike socks or jackets made from old quilts and was instantly intrigued. After some research on the Internet and search platforms such as TikTok and Depop, I found a large number of brands (small and large) that made new and innovative creations out of machines and upcycling materials. There's a lot of debate about whether using raw materials or upcycling fabrics is the most sustainable option, especially for bigger brands. However, it was suggested that this is still a better option, especially for small brands that want to be more sustainable and don't mind producing in limited quantities.
While many of these brands go for vintage or used fabrics, they release the product in limited runs or drops where the products sell out instantly due to their popularity. If you are looking for unique pieces to add to your wardrobe, the brands below are the right place for you.
Frankie Collective sells vintage on its website, but is known for its "Rework" collections, where vintage garments that would otherwise end up in a landfill are salvaged and transformed into a modern creation.
What started as a high school hobby eventually turned into a fashion business. The brand's founder, Elena Bonvicini, roamed vintage stores and took Levis for men, redesigned the design, and sold them in her high school. Now the denim brand is a Gigi Hadid and Hailey Bieber favorite.
Re / Done works with brands like Levi's and Hanes to improve the quality of traditional brands and revive them with more modern silhouettes.
Psychic Outlaw turns bandanas and quilts into works of art. While the limited drops with pre-made bandanas and quilts sell out quickly, there are also options to have your own so they can customize an item for you.
You can recognize Mia Vesper as the designer who created a dress for Beyonce and her dancers in the Black Is King video. Vesper creates unique ready-to-wear collections, takes vintage tapestries and rugs and transforms them into unique items.
Almost on time was one of the first upcycling brands I found on Instagram and she was clearly a fan favorite as a lot of girls were trying to get a grip on one of their pieces. She is best known for transforming men's sportswear into feminine pieces like corsets and mini skirts. She recently teamed up with Urban Outfitters to bring out a limited edition capsule on their website.
You've probably seen one of Mirror Palais' magical garments on your Instagram feed, but the next drop features vintage fabric corsets that you can pre-order on February 8th.
Christy Dawn's dresses are clearly inspired by vintage versions and give me a big cottage-core vibe. While a large part of the brand revolves around sustainability, the "Deadstock Collection" shows pieces made from salvaged and revitalized fabrics.
