Hello there 🙂
Editor's note: This post was originally published last year. Since our support for black-owned brands is forever, we thought we'd update any sold out products to make shopping for the latest and greatest from some of our favorite brands and designers easier.
While the support of the black community and black-owned businesses is particularly important right now, there is a need and opportunity to provide this type of support, love and commitment every day. Now & Forever. Black culture has informed and inspired the beauty space for decades – a fact that we must celebrate and uphold.
Its a lot to do. Now that we've communicated locally and on our social platforms, it's time to stand up over (not easy to) the occasion and take actionable steps with deep indentations. Here, our Who What Wear editorial team has featured a number of ways you can make a difference in the fight against racism, as well as a list of resources to get you started.
One such way to support and take a stand now is when you are able to put money where your mouth is. In addition to educating, participating in protests, signing petitions, donating, and calling on our government officials to seek justice, buying fashion and beauty products from black-owned brands is extremely helpful, especially given the financial implications the COVID- 19 had on black-owned brands that were hit harder than others. (Please familiarize yourself with this helpful graphic to understand why.)
Below we share 32 black-owned beauty brands to be endorsed (now and forever). Keep scrolling to start shopping, or just take screenshots or bookmarks for a later purchase date if your money doesn't allow it.
Uoma Beauty (pronounced uh-mah) was founded by Nigerian beauty manager Sharon Chuter and supports the belief that beauty begins the moment you choose to be yourself. The goal: to rewrite the rules of inclusivity and diversity in the beauty industry.
We recommend the Say What ?! Foundation: Choose from 51 shades. (Chuter used the Fitzpatrick scale to ensure that each tone complements the skin in a unique way based on the color groups it falls into.) The foundation is also durable, lightweight, and wonderfully buildable to suit your coverage needs.
Trust us – you've never had a truly luxurious shaving experience until you invested in the stunning collection of shaving and body paraphernalia from Oui the People. Founded by Karen Young, the brand embodies a commitment to restoring beauty – a mission to "observe your language" with the knowledge that brands have a huge impact on culture and language. Also, rather than enforcing the jaded ideal of perfectly smooth, hairless skin, the brand focuses on really well-built and effective products that are carefully and beautifully designed to make you feel great in your unique skin.
We can't recommend Oui's legendary single razors enough – some of the models are currently sold out but can still be pre-ordered.
Founder Desiree Verdejo launched Hyper Skin after experiencing severe flare-ups while pregnant with her first child. As she explains on the brand's website, persistent breakouts have always been a constant struggle, but the confused hormones and pregnancy-related pigmentation have fueled the situation.
Unable to find products that met their needs, Verdejo set out to develop their own solution in the form of Hyper Clear, a unique vitamin C serum that contained potent, clean, and natural ingredients such as vitamin E, kojic acid, turmeric and bearberry to effectively smooth uneven skin texture while lightening and treating dullness and hyperpigmentation.
Think 100% vegan, cruelty-free, epic nutritious (for your skin) makeup products that will look beautiful on any complexion. Founded in 2012 by former Shark tank Wall Street stockbroker Melissa Butler, The Lip Bar, was created with the aim of redefining standards of beauty. Because, as Butler points out on the brand's website, "there is no standard We are the standard. "
There are plenty of exciting places to start shopping. However, we recommend starting with the best-selling liquid matte lipsticks. The fan favorite looks like a shine but dries out to a well-hydrated, if flawlessly matte finish.
When it comes to inclusivity, sunscreen (which almost always puts a white, ashen finish on the skin) is notoriously problematic. Founder Katonya Breaux started Unsun in 2016 after years of frustration at the lack of options for clear, clean, and non-resident SPF formulas that women with color can safely use on their skin.
In addition to the SPF spiked hand cream, the brand offers two different versions of their popular tinted mineral-based SPF: Medium / Dark or Light / Medium.
Founder Nyakio Kamoche Grieco grew up with her grandmother in Kenya, who used coffee beans to exfoliate and care for her skin. Inspired by this, Kamoche Grieco has developed one of the most luxurious skin care lines on the market. The line of the same name, Nyakio Beauty, offers five different collections for ultimate customization, everything is made by hand in small quantities and only vegan, cruelty-free and ethically sound ingredients are used. (Think delicious inclusions like Spanish almond oil and Ghana African black soap.)
The world of beauty was celebrated together when Tracee Ellis Ross created her own Pattern Beauty hair care line last year. (Click here for more information and for our editor Courtney Higgs' in-depth review of the line.) The range features everything from luxury microfiber hair towels to hair ties and clips to nourishing treatment oils and curling products. The argan oil-based serum below is an outstanding product.
Sweet, serotonin-inducing, deliciously beautiful make-up products are the name of the game when it comes to the Beauty Bakerie founded by Cashmere Nicole. The brand as a whole is really a feast for the eyes, but if you're looking for your first starter we recommend the popular lip whip, which is formulated to withstand even the highest water pressure. In other words, apply and don't worry about retouching until you are forced to remove them.
"Affordable, powerful, clean beauty for the forgotten colors, "Range Beauty describes its stunning cosmetic offerings that combine two of the industry's most important needs – far richer colors and far less toxic ingredients. Founder Alicia Scott began her career in the fashion industry and immediately noticed the lack of hues for Women of all skin tones during photo shoots and runway shows. According to the brand's website, Range Beauty is designed for individuals who represent all hues, all skin types, and all genders, and want wallet-friendly options without being forced to forego quality and safe ingredients, The brand's All-Star Foundation is one of the few formulas available specifically designed for skin conditions like eczema and acne.
Briogeo is another magical hair brand that we are happy to support. It was born out of founder Nancy Twine's realizing that the majority of store-bought hair care products in the market were seriously lacking in terms of ingredients and performance. So Twine went to work creating her own line of strand-saving beauty elixirs, inspired by the homemade hair formulas she had concocted with her grandmother in West Virginia. Briogeo doesn't despair, fixed! Deep Conditioning Mask is award-winning and a renowned bestseller. You can find it in the hair care cabinet of every single beauty editor.
Think of KNC Beauty as the ultimate destination for affordable, quirky, and collagen-rich lip and eye masks. KNC Beauty was born to founder Kristen Noel Crawley, KNC Beauty after Crawley took a trip to Tokyo where she fell in love with a wall of lip masks. When she found that there were no natural lip masks on the market here in the US, she got to work. Now the brand is offering the coveted lip mask formula along with other skin-enhancing options like under-eye masks, lip scrubs, and lip balms. We recommend snapping a bit of everything.
Pat McGrath is one of the most famous makeup artists in history, and her eponymous makeup brand Pat McGrath Labs lives up to her iconic name. Fun Fact: The brand also just announced iconic supermodel Naomi Campbell as their first global face from Pat Mcgrath Labs.
"The entire planet is as obsessed with cosmetics as ever," explains McGrath on the brand's website. "Make-up is a movement. Make-up is fascinating. Make-up is Head. Mantra-like, three words have been repeating themselves in my head since I was young. Obsession. Inspiration. Addiction. Those words became my guiding principles, my manifesto, as I brought this brand to life. "
When you visit the brand's website, you'll be presented with an array of lipsticks, eye shadow palettes, and glittery highlighters, but our favorite foundation is still the brand's skin-enhancing foundation. For best results, we recommend investing in the entire system, which also includes a foundation and face powder.
Mented was developed specifically for women of color and came about when founders KJ Miller and Amanda E. Johnson couldn't find a nude lipstick on the market that was suitable for deep skin tones. So they pulled up their sleeves and began their goal of creating a stunning selection of nude lipsticks and liners to complement the rich lip colors. Now there are plenty of other makeup enhancements to choose from (think of everything from eye shadow palettes to brow essentials), but their lipsticks are still a favorite.
BeautyStat Cosmetics founder and chemist Ron Robinson is one of the most famous and respected experts in the beauty field. But it wasn't until Robinson's team discovered a Holy Grail technology to meet consumer’s most important skin care needs that he took the plunge to debut his own line. There are currently three groundbreaking products on offer: the Universal C Skin Refiner, the Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream and the Universal C Eye Protector. The brand's mission? Explore the planet with the aim of discovering new beauty ingredients and innovative technologies, and continue to develop products that focus on high performance.
Oyin Handmade ("oyin" is the Yoruba word for honey, by the way) was founded in 2001 by Jamyla Bennu (a self-proclaimed lifelong naturalist and ingredient-conscious maker) when Bennu couldn't find any commercially available natural and organic products for her highly textured, natural hair . As you may have seen by now, honey is the MVP ingredient of the brand's extensive line of products and is known for its natural moisturizing and protective properties.
“We remain family owned and operated and we manufacture our products with pride and care,” explains the brand on its website. "We are enthusiastic about our commitment to high-quality, effective formulations made from natural, organic and food-safe ingredients. Our products are gentle, animal-free and moisture-oriented and offer perfect nutrition and flawless styling for dry, curly and highly structured hair types."
Ooli is a unisex hair care line with recognizable and pronounceable ingredients that naturally nourish and care for every hair texture. "Regardless of whether the locs are short, long, ruffled or coiffed, there is something for everyone who refreshes his crown of fame and brings it to the point!" notes the brand's founder, Jessica Pritchett.
Hair care products that work specifically with dreadlocks are another area where Ooli excels. This highly durable, shine-enhancing gel is a well-known favorite with beautiful ingredients like baobab and aloe vera to promote a happy, healthy scalp and highlights.
The Kinky-Curly hair care collection, founded by Shelley Davis in 2003, was developed to add moisture, environmental protection and hold to natural hair without leaving the strands dry and brittle.
The brand's Curling Custard is an award-winning top seller that delivers a moisturizing dash of moisture, as well as weightless definition that works well for curls and waves. The formula is made with advanced botanicals like humectant agave nectar to rejuvenate and strengthen hair without wrinkles or crunch.
Founded by Christine Martey-Ochola, Ph.D. and Anne Cheatham, CFO of the dynamic duo, Nuele was born out of the goal of having healthy, happy, shiny and manageable hair without the need for chemical relaxants or keratin treatments. which are notoriously harsh and harmful to the hair.
"Basically, we wanted everything to be able to show the many sides of the hair that we were blessed with," they explain on their website. "Curls one day. Especially the next. We put our heads together with our chemical and biological backgrounds and voilà! Nuele was born."
You can now buy their only all-star hair product, Hair Serum, which they call the only clean, all-in-one, lightweight, residue-free, yet oil-rich formula on the market.
Meet Loraine R. Dowdy, a Brooklyn-born Caribbean woman who started Colored Raine in 2013 after leaving her career in the financial industry behind. Dowdy noticed a gaping hole in the industry and dreamed of creating his own line of cosmetics that would inspire people with color to lively self-expression, variety and many inclusive hues.
Dowdy's deep love for rich colors is reflected in her breathtaking makeup line. Your coveted eyeshadow palettes are the focus of our radar. (However, if you explore the brand's website, you can find wonderful facial products, highlighters, and lip service as well.)
This vegan and cruelty-free beauty brand is one of the newest on our radar right now. Businesswoman and YouTube personality B.Simone launched her eponymous brand, B.Simone Beauty, last year, and the brand has already gained immense popularity. In addition to makeup bags and accessories, you will find many stunning lip products like liners, glosses and lipsticks. Oh, and did we mention that everything is surprisingly affordable?
Created in 2012 by Rachel James, Pear Nova is an elegant collection of beautiful nail polishes uniquely inspired by the most innovative fashion designers and the coolest runway trends. In other words, your polish does not contain formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, camphor, toluene, or dibutyl phthalate DBP.
Despite the popularity of clip-in hair extensions, there is a serious void when it comes to comprehensive clip-in options for curls, spirals, and natural texture. Enter Kurly Klips, an award-winning brand with the first (and highest rated) natural clip-in hair extensions on the internet.
Founder Lana Boone claims to be Type A when it comes to practicing the art of perfect natural hair extensions, and she states on her website that she turned down more than $ 20,000 worth of hair for simply not having hers met high standards. “I'm obsessed with making you look good, and that means sending you hair that meets my strict standards,” she says. Sometimes this means we're out of stock but my customers know the wait is worth it. "She's also one of the few CEOs we know who respond to every single email, literally within 24 hours, Monday through Friday.
Her eponymous beauty brand Iman Cosmetics was founded by none other than legendary supermodel Iman and is considered to be one of the most popular brands that include shadows. ever. (It was introduced in 1994.)
Tired of always having to bring her own makeup for photo shoots and sets, she started her business by founding the Second to None Cream to Powder Foundation and many other equally standout makeup and skin care formulations that were made from there were introduced. This cover cream concealer below is another favorite.
When you visit The Honey Pot Company website the first few words you see sum it up pretty well. The brand is based on powerful herbs that are made by women and are 100% natural. It is the first complete women's care system that cleanses, protects, and balances the vagina. Demand is high and as of now, the convenient menstrual cups and refreshing panty spray ($ 8) are the only items currently in stock. That is, the goods are so Well, we recommend checking back in regularly.
We're also big fans of how founder Bea Dixon decided to give something back. By purchasing one of the brand's #HappyPeriod Pins, you are helping the brand donate feminine care products to those in need. It has partnered with Happy Period, an organization that offers menstrual hygiene kits for the homeless, low-income or in poverty.
Klur makes some of the most dreamy healing elixirs to put on your face. Browse through founder Lesley Thornton's range of popular formulas and their commitment to usable, minimalist, and clean skin care products is more than evident. (We doubt you can go for just one bottle!)
"To me, Klur is more than just quality products and a conscious ethos," she says on the brand's website. "It's about a human connection. At its core there is a well-designed functional approach to both processes and products. We are an independent, self-financed, women-owned and operated company. We believe sustainability is not just about appeal means the long-term effects on our ecosystem, but that we also have to manufacture products that meet the demands of everyday life. "
According to Mayvenn founder Diishan Imira, his (now booming) brand of hair products started in the trunk of his Toyota Corolla. Fast forward, and the brand has grown into a nationwide movement that includes more than 50,000 stylists, hundreds of thousands of clients, and millions of dollars invested back in neighborhood salons.
"Mayvenn started with the idea that if people with color were to spend billions of dollars on beauty products, then we should own the companies that sell those products," he writes on the brand's website. "In addition, these products should be of the highest quality and offer great customer service."
The extensions and wigs business can be difficult to navigate as the quality can be poor and you (unfortunately) don't always get what you pay for. We love Mayvenn's commitment to quality, affordability, satisfaction, trustworthiness and respect. The following bundle is one of the brand's top sellers.
Hanahana Beauty represents everything we crave in an amazing beauty brand. Founder Abena Boamah-Acheampong has created some of the most luxurious body butters and balms that you can apply to your dry skin. The vanilla lavender is our favorite. In addition, Boamah-Acheampong recognizes the importance of transparency and sustainability in the circle.
For example, the brand's hero ingredient is Fair Trade, ethically sourced shea butter that comes directly from the Katariga Women & # 39; s Shea Cooperative in Ghana. By committed to giving back, the brand maintains a holistic, bottom-up support approach that improves economic health, environmental conditions and self-tolerance in the shea trade.
We've searched high and low for editors, influencers, or celebrities who don't sing Shani Dardens praises, and they just don't exist! She has an uncanny ability to make your skin clear and glowing almost instantly. So it's not surprising that their eponymous skin care brand has an extremely loyal following. In fact, almost every single product in their collection has achieved cult classic status.
You can't go wrong with shopping, but Dardens Texture Reform Serum is an icon. It's a great alternative for people looking for a quality retinol product but might be new to the retinol club or have sensitive skin.
We tend to think of Golde as more of a wellness brand, but given the brand's choice of face masks and the idea that wellness and beauty go hand in hand, it certainly deserves its place. Trinity Mouzon Wofford co-founded Golde in 2017 with her partner Issey Kobori to bring more "good vibes" to the wellness industry.
Brooklyn-based Golde is an independent brand busy creating superfood-enhanced essentials for the face and body. Whether you go for one of the face masks or the fan-favorite latte mixes, you can count on natural formulations that are lovingly infused with many glowing organic ingredients.
Ted Gibson is one of the most famous and respected hairdressers in the business. So you can imagine the excitement when he launched his own multi-purpose hair product.
Inspired by his experience working on high profile editorial shoots and preparing clients for red carpets, this unique non-sticky mousse-foam hybrid brings tons of different benefits to your strands. First of all, it smells amazing. (Think figs, amber, cilantro, vanilla, and a touch of coconut and wood.) Second, it keeps hair healthy and moisturized. And third, it improves your natural hair texture while increasing shine and softness.
A household name in the beauty industry, Vernon François is a true proponent of the versatility of textured hair. He has had some of the most iconic hair moments in history and his wide range of hair products offers multiple collections for every hair type.
As if that wasn't enough, its specialty formulations go a step further thanks to additives like ethically harvested organic oils from Africa and the valued lack of things like parabens, sulfates, phthalates, cruelty, gluten, DEA and dyes.
If you're looking to browse some of the most vibrant, gem-like eye shadow palettes, you've come to the right place at Juvia & # 39; s Place. Founder Chichi Eburu started the line with the intention of celebrating the beauty of the rich, highly pigmented colors that define African tribes.
"Africa is not only the birthplace of humanity, but also the birthplace of all beauty," states the brand on its website. "Juvia & # 39; s Place was created to celebrate the rebels, rulers and queens of the African kingdoms long ago who emulated and honored beauty through their soulful and innovative techniques that the best beauty gurus still use today."
Of course, the brand offers a lot more than just eyeshadow, but the stunning palettes are a real feast for the eyes and have a habit of selling at lightning speed.
